Maybe “giant” is a relative term for a size #8 sakasa kebari. After all, in Japan they regularly fish flies that large (or larger). But for me, a #8 is huge. You see, I got some grouse feathers from Tenkara Bum that were too large for the #12 and #10 sakasa kebari I normally tie, so, I decided to tie a few larger flies including this Amano inspired fly. I also tied some darker patterns and will try them out on the water tomorrow. I’ll be interested to see how these larger flies work as attractors in a smaller stream. Hey, I just noticed…that fly is in TenkaraTalk colors!

As a former fly fishing guide originally from Western New York, he moved to Colorado and became an early adopter of tenkara which perfectly suited the small, high altitude streams and lakes there. He has not fished a Western-style fly rod for trout since.
One day my sakasa kebari will look as good as yours. Your flies look super good….do you make them for yourself, or would you ever sell a few??
Hi Steven,
Setting your sights low, eh? 😉 I don’t sell them but I can send you some if you email me or use the contact form to discuss offline.
Have you ever made a bigger Sakasa Kebari? I tied some #6, killer on bluegill but never tried them in a trout stream.
Beautiful fly, Jason. And I thought my #10s were big! Have a good day on the water today. I’m heading out too.
Jason,
is that about the angle forward that you tie all your kebari’s? That’s about how I have been tying mine and have been wandering if I have it at the best angle forward.
A size 8 looks small when compared to the size 4 kebari I fished last year. I only had one day to fish it, seeing as it was the last day of the WI inland trout season. I ended up with 2 nice browns. It is alot of kebari to cast, but it worked well and will have a spot in my kebari box. I fished a size 8 one day this year and did quite well. I think that it will be worth my time to fish bigger kebari this year.

Nice fly Jason. I am yet to tie a size 8 but i did tie a size 12 double long kebari a few days ago. I had it out at the local pond yesterday and had huge success. It was one of those great a fish a cast days. I also like the red head on your fly. I’ve been painting the top half of every fly I’ve tied over the last year with red nail polish.
Cheers,
Jim
Giant sakasa kebari, what about micro sakasa kebari? I’ve recently tied a few in size 30 and caught 9 trout all in the 4-6 inch range. What I really like about this is that I believe the size does matter, maybe not from 12 to 14 but 8 to 12 to 30 and probably something like a 20 will make a difference. I know this post is a bit old but does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Is this fly tied on a standard dry fly hook, size 8?
Hi Jeff, yes it is.
