Anthony Naples of Casting Around and I recently teamed up to start a new tenkara podcast series called “The Tenkara Cast”. In this first episode, we talk about a variety of topics that were submitted by friends and followers on social media. We had a great time doing the podcast and are planning on making it an ongoing monthly series so if there are any topics you’d like to see covered in the future, please leave a comment below.

http://tenkaratalk.comJason is an avid fly angler and backpacker. As a former fly fishing guide originally from Western New York, he moved to Colorado and became an early adopter of tenkara which perfectly suited the small, high altitude streams and lakes there. He has not fished a Western-style fly rod for trout since.
In the picture, isn’t Jason on the right?
Steve,
Oops. Thanks for catching that. I’ve fixed it.
great job – very informative.. 1 question i have re level line is ideal length for beginners. i attached 30′ of 2 wt and flailed around until i resigned to shortening by 6′ and feeling less ridiculous. your discussion will have me going back to give it another try – especially in light of your casting explanation.
btw – i regularly land 19+” browns (easy) and bows (not easy cause they jump repeatedly – so you have to bow to the bow). patience is the key along with a good net technique…..
finally – could you somehow break up the cast? 41 minutes is a problem if i wasn’t retired – but even then my adhd gets in the way…..
thanks for making my tenkara experience more enjoyable….
Hi Bill,
Thanks. I’m glad you liked it. Yes, we’re working on some format ideas to break it up into segments. Also need to improve the audio a little. This was the first podcast either of us has ever done so we weren’t expecting it to be perfect. I think after we get a few under our belt, it will gradually improve.
Jason, I enjoyed listening to your first Tenkara Cast. I’m still not 100% on board yet. But have been borrowing a buddy’s Iwana and will be taking it to Estes with me in Oct. But I still enjoy listening and reading about Tenkara.

hi jason,
what about the first part of my comment re level line length for beginners?
Hi Bill, sorry I skipped that. In my opinion, there is no “correct” length for a beginner. Some people are just naturally more comfortable with a long line right off the bat while others find it easier to cast a shorter line. Many of the Japanese experts say that the best thing to do is to start with a line that is the same length as the rod, practice, then gradually increase the length and practice some more.
The typical answer give on line length for beginners is to always start with a line that is the same length as the rod because it’s easier to cast. In my opinion, the opposite is true. A short line has very little mass, making it difficult to feel the rod load and unload. Without any haptic feedback, it’s difficult to get the timing right. So it’s say experiment and try different lengths until you find the one that fits you best. Hope this doesn’t come across as a non-answer but some questions aren’t always black and white.
Now this is a pod cast worth listening to. Great work Jason & Tony.
