I got a lot of footage of the Tenkara USA demo at this year’s fly fishing show and thought I would break it up into shorter, more digestible videos on specific topics rather than post it in its entirety. In this video, Daniel shows us how to land a fish with tenkara–with a special focus on using long tenkara lines. Pay particular attention at 01:02 when Daniel points out the poor form of landing techniques we’re used to seeing in the western fly fishing magazines.

http://tenkaratalk.comJason is an avid fly angler and backpacker. As a former fly fishing guide originally from Western New York, he moved to Colorado and became an early adopter of tenkara which perfectly suited the small, high altitude streams and lakes there. He has not fished a Western-style fly rod for trout since.
Nice. That video sounded decent to me. The content was very good. 😎
Thanks for sharing. tj
TJ, this is one of the better portions of the video where I was standing closer to the speaker.
You know, it’s funny. Every time Daniel gives a presentation on the basics, I think I will know everything. But then he always manages to slip in some little piece of information or tip that I didn’t know or think about. In this one, the revelation was how much control you give up when you spread your arms apart in the typical “landing pose” you see in the western magazines and videos. I thought it was a good point to keep in mind.
Also nice in videos like these to see what a seasoned vetaran of any art or sport can make something look so easy. I am still at the fumbling for the line slipping on rocks awkward stage of my fly fishing journey. 😎
One day…. one day…. tj
TJ, LOL, when they were filming part of the tenkara documentary, I hooked a fish and was thinking, “ah, this will look so cool in the video.” I then proceeded to make the most awkward landing ever, fumbling around like an idiot, losing the line, and almost falling into the river. I hope they cut that part out or I’ll be immortalized as the Tim Taylor of landing fish!
Of course Tim Taylor is rather cool so I would be happy with that. 😎
You are one step above me then because I WOULD have fallen in the water, I WOULD have fallen on my net and broke it, and I WOULD have got the hook stuck on my shirt someplace. heheheh

Great job Jason. This will be a “go to” video when I get questions about landing fish. Thanks!
Thanks Tom! More topics to come…
Hey Jason, thanks for posting! Indeed the sound is not as bad as I thought it would be. I think that’s a very important lesson. landing a fish calmly, with good form, will ensure many more fish are landed I think.
Thanks again.
And more importantly, landed without damage to the fish.
