Here’s another quick video clip from the Denver Fly Fishing Show of Daniel Galhardo breaking down the basic tenkara casting stroke. Sorry for the bad audio. It’s hard to get good sound at a trade show without a lapel mic. Plus, the lighting at the show was horrible. While the quality might not be great, I think you can still get a few good tips out of this video.

As a former fly fishing guide originally from Western New York, he moved to Colorado and became an early adopter of tenkara which perfectly suited the small, high altitude streams and lakes there. He has not fished a Western-style fly rod for trout since.
Thanks for sharing this! tj
btw, do you remember how short and how long Daniel was casting at the show? Curious what visitors were able to witness of the casting.
I know when I cast I am fairly accurate at 20 to 25 feet and that is about as far as I do my lines today. Trying to get the whole better casting technique figured out into muscle memory before I try those 20 to 25 foot lines folks talk about.

TJ, I think I cast a 22ft line and a 28ft line (plus 4 ft of tippet on both). I know I cast a 28ft line here in MA, but am not 100% sure I did it on that demo, but I think I did.
Therefore, you were casting say someplace between 35′ and 40′ casts I take it. That should have impressed many I would say. I think that is a sweet distance for sure. I think some non tenkara folks think all we do is cast 20′ but someplace between 30′ and 40′ is do-able. tj
